This surprise proposal went off without a hitch for Emily and Grant because of all the effort Grant put in ahead of time! He’d already toured Zilker Botanical Garden in advance, picked his spot (the waterfall), scouted backup locations, and asked all the right questions about timing and logistics. As a proposal photographer, that kind of preparation is the best thing a client can do to make the day go smoothly.
A Proposal at the Zilker Botanical Garden Waterfall
Zilker Botanical Garden is popular. Really popular. Unfortunately, right when Grant was due to arrive at the waterfall with Emily, there were already a handful of people hanging out by the water. But my fellow Texans came through! I politely asked a few folks if they’d mind scooting over for a couple of minutes, and every single person said yes without hesitation.
With the spot cleared, Grant walked Emily to the base of the waterfall and dropped to one knee. She said yes, and the small crowd of onlookers who had stuck around erupted into cheers (actually one lady excitedly showed me she filmed the whole thing on her phone). It was sweet to have strangers become part of the story, and made the moment feel bigger than just the two of them.
High School Sweethearts
Emily and Grant are high school sweethearts from the Austin area, which made Zilker Botanical Garden a fitting choice. You could see the ease from being in their hometown, as well as from close to 9 years of being together. That kind of comfort is one of the intangibles that really does show up in photos.
Why Botanical Gardens Are Great for Proposals
One of the biggest perks of a proposal at a botanical garden is what happens after the big moment. Once the proposal was done, we had the entire rest of the garden to work with for engagement photos. Grant had already identified several spots he liked during his scouting trip, so we moved through them easily and ended up with a variety of completely different backdrops in one session.
That’s the benefit of a garden setting. You’re not stuck in one location hoping the background cooperates. You’ve got stone archways, ponds, tropical plants, open lawns, and winding paths all within walking distance. On a sunny late October afternoon, the light was warm and golden and was easy to work with for me.
I’ve found this to be true at every botanical garden I’ve shot at. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond and Bayou Bend Collection in Houston offer the same kind of variety, where you walk away with photos that look like they came from five different locations.
Hook ‘Em
You can’t do an Austin engagement session without at least one Hook ‘Em photo! Emily (a University of Texas grad) and Grant were more than happy to oblige. These two were genuinely fun to be around, the kind of couple who laughs easily and doesn’t take themselves too seriously. It made for a session that felt relaxed from start to finish.
Planning a Proposal at Zilker Botanical Garden
Good to know: Zilker Botanical Garden charges a photography fee for professional sessions, so plan ahead and check their website for current pricing. The garden gets busy on weekends, especially in the fall when the weather is finally bearable in Texas. If you’re thinking about proposing here, I’d strongly recommend doing what Grant did. Visit the garden beforehand, pick your spot, and have a backup or two that you are able to pivot to quickly if needed.
Late October was a great call for timing. The light was warm, the heat had mellowed out, and the garden was green without being wilted.
